One of the best things about Christmas is the TV specials. I like to get the TV guide out and flick through circling the TV shows and films that I want to watch over the festive period, even if they’re repeats and I’ve seen them numerous times before. Although there are many shows with Christmas episodes that I would gladly watch, I thought I would share some of my absolute favourites.
Friends: The One Where Rachel Quits
Friends is my all time favourite show and no matter how many times I see it, it never fails to make me laugh. There’s a few Christmas episode that are brilliant but this one is lovely for many reasons. Ross accidentally breaks a girl scout’s leg and has to meet her target of selling at least 400 boxes of cookies in order for her to win a trip to space camp. Despite his efforts he fails and ends up using Chandler and Joey’s apartment to create their own space camp for the girl. Rachel quits her job at Central Perk and the gang help her apply for a new job. Joey and Monica surprise Phoebe by filling the living room with all the unwanted Christmas trees that no one wants, much to Phoebe’s delight.
The Simpsons: Marge Be Not Proud
Bart is caught trying to steal a video game from a store and is barred. He tries to keep this a secret from Homer and Marge, but when the family go back to the very same store to get their Christmas photo taken, Bart’s terrible secret comes to light. Marge is upset and blames herself for Bart’s wrong doing, causing her to distance herself from him. Bart is left out of the family festive activities such as building family snowmen. Bart returns home one evening and Marge fears her son has been stealing again but he surprises her by giving her a Christmas present which turns out to be a framed picture of himself which he paid for in full. She is overjoyed by the thoughtful gift and in return, allows Bart to have an early Christmas present. It’s a video game, but not the one he wanted.
Frasier: Miracle on 3rd or 4th Street
Frasier is looking forward to spending Christmas with his son Frederick only for his plans to be cancelled. Frasier takes out his disappointment on his family, mainly his dad, Martin. They end up arguing and Frasier decides to cover a shift at the radio station on Christmas Day rather than spend time with Martin. After finishing his shift, he heads to a cheap looking diner for some dinner and soon after finishing his food, he realises he left his wallet behind. The kind regulars put what little money they have together to foot the bill for him and encourage him to call Martin and settle their differences.
Only Fools and Horses: Time on Our Hands
Having grown up watching Only Fools and Horses, this was the episode everyone waited for. Raquel and Del are hosting her parents for Christmas and after a long rift, tensions are sure to be high. Del wants to impress his other half’s family and goes all out with a festive feast, only for Uncle Albert to mix up the gravy with coffee! Rodney and Cassandra are still struggling following their miscarriage but things start looking up for the Trotters when Raquel’s father, who is an antiques dealer, discovers a valuable watch in their garage. This is such an emotional episode and I wished they’d stopped here, even though I love the later episodes too.
