Snacking & Portion Control: Are You Doing It Right?

For a lot of people, it often feels as though losing weight is a constant battle where you either feel guilty for eating or you feel hungry and miserable. Let’s face it, not only is that going to leave you lacking any kind of motivation to lose weight, but it’s no way to live. If you want to hit your weight loss goals, you’re never going to be able to do it if you’re constantly hungry and frustrated. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to help. Here’s a few ways that you can lose weight without going hungry all the time.

Replace bad snacks with good ones

Snacking is my downfall and it’s usually the thing that leads most people to put on weight. Let’s be honest, it can be seriously difficult to cut down on snacks for one simple reason: they’re really nice! It’s nice to be able to munch on something salty or sweet while you’re on your break at work or at home watching TV. However, the issue often isn’t that you’re snacking, it’s what you’re snacking on. One of the best things that you can do is replace the foods that you’re eating with healthier alternatives. Instead of crisps, why not eat things like almonds instead and you can replace sugar with natural alternatives like maple syrup. These simple changes are going to make it easier to keep any weight off without having to force yourself to go cold turkey on the snacks. My favourite alternative snacks at the moment are the Graze Smokehouse BBQ Crunch and Punchy Protein Nuts. I’m also enjoying the Snack a Jacks Salt & Vinegar and Chocolate Chip Rice Cakes, so tasty.

Think about density

The density of certain foods is one of those things that a lot of people tend to forget about. As important as it is to reduce the number of calories you’re consuming, just cutting down portion sizes but eating the same foods isn’t going to do much in the long run. All that’s going to happen is that you’re going to feel more hungry than before which makes you more likely to give up entirely. By switching salty and greasy foods for things like fresh fruit and vegetables, which have a high water content, you’re able to reduce your caloric intake without having to cut down on portion sizes. A full plate of fresh fruit is going to be far more filling and less fattening than a tiny amount of something like potato chips or chocolate.

It can often be tempting to let yourself go hungry because it feels as though your diet is really having an impact. But the most important thing to do is to listen to your body, and if your stomach is grumbling away, that’s a good sign that you should eat something right away. Remember that it’s ok to treat yo’self now and then. It’s also worth noting that going hungry won’t do you any good and it comes with a whole bunch of serious health risks that are just simply not worth it.
